Peninsula, a division of Parkwest Medical Center, has set a new standard for effective, innovative and caring mental health services in East Tennessee. With a combined total of 75 years of experience, the members of Peninsula have helped thousands of people recover from their disorders and dependencies and lead healthy, positive and productive lives.

Peninsula is a 155-bed treatment center providing services for inpatient mental health and alcohol/drug crisis stabilization for adults, adolescents and children.

Our approach to effective treatment includes the involvement of multi-disciplinary treatment teams comprised of psychiatrists, psychologists, nurses, social workers, activities therapists, certified substance abuse counselors and other mental health professionals working together to develop treatment and discharge plans that best meet the physical and emotional needs of our patients.

Nursing responsibilities include triaging of psychiatric and medical patient care needs, milieu oversight, patient education, supportive counseling and medication administration. We operate four units divided by level of functioning, acuity, diagnosis and age. Working with the multi-disciplinary team is a regular feature of our work. Ongoing clinical education is provided.

Summer externs in the behavioral inpatient setting work with the nursing staff to learn about the behavioral patient. We would be happy to speak one-on-one with anyone interested, as well as provide a tour or chance to shadow with one of our health care providers.

    Intensive Care Unit

Roane Medical Center’s ICU is a six-bed unit with teams of RNs and HUCs. We manage and care for adult, critically ill patients. The staff in the ICU work with highly technical equipment and this environment lends itself to be a great learning environment. We care for the patients that require ventilators, cardiac monitors, and other interventions. We provide careful monitoring of each patients status. We are proud to credit our staff for their “Best Practice” care that shows we have had NO ventilator associated pneumonia cases for two years. Our nurses work with the Physicians in providing that constant observation that allows fast intervention when a patient needs it. We titrate drugs to prescribed effect; some of those drugs may be cardiac medications, some blood pressure, some for kidney function or glucose control. We have a group of nurses that have the “critical thinking” skills necessary to provide the care that the critically ill patient requires.

    Emergency Department

We have a fast-paced 12-bed ED with growing volumes. We see ± 2000 patients a month. Our staff exhibits a positive attitude and is patient focused. Our nurses must have the ability to multi-task and care for a variety of patients- adults, pediatrics and the occasional trauma patient. Team members include shift leader, RNs, HUC and ED Tech. We deliver professional and compassionate nursing care to a variety of patients. An extern would work with each team member learning the technical as well as the professional skills needed to function in a fast paced community hospital emergency department.

The RMC Emergency Department is dedicated to rapid assessment and treatment of the patient seeking or needing emergency care. Our 24-hour ED is here to serve the community with a well trained, knowledgeable and caring staff.

    Surgical Services

Our surgery department boasts 4 operating rooms, and two endoscopy suites, 4 bed pre-op holding area and a recovery room. Our staffing mix consists of RN’s and CST’s. We perform a wide variety of surgeries involving but not limited to, general, orthopedics, GYN, ENT, eyes, and endoscopy. We have a friendly and knowledgeable staff that enjoys teaching.

Included in our department is a very busy day surgery team. Comprised of RN’s and LPN’s the Day Surgery team coordinates the pre surgery and post surgery care and recovery of our patients. Very fast paced with multiple patients coming and going all day. They must see that the patient is safe and ready for discharge and has their discharge teaching completed.

Summer externs work alongside RNs in each area to provide care to our surgical patients

    Medical-Surgical/Telemetry

Telemetry/Med Surg is a 20 bed fast paced unit with an extensive patient population. Our teams consist of RN`s, LPN`s, CNA`s, and HUC`s who are caring, compassionate and dedicated to patient care. We have a family oriented environment and work well as a team. A typical nurse assignment would involve assessment, care planning, discharge planning, blood administration, wound care and an environment of critical thinking. This environment enhances the new nurses learning and growth opportunities. Any extern could expect to learn time management, critical thinking, team dynamics and a score of other valuable skills. You would work with each team member learning each role.

Our patient base is a wide variety of people experiencing difficulty with acute and/or chronic diseases such as COPD, CHF, diabetes, CVA’s, and orthopedics to mention a few. We care for post surgery patients as well as post intensive care patients. “Best Practice” care environment is provided to each and every patient. Our patients have names and are recognized as a person of worth, not just a disease or health problem. Working with these patients and physicians is a privilege.
